Portland General Electric developed a new training center for line workers on a 4.3-acre site in Sherwood. For more than 20 years, PGE’s highly regulated, four-year line training program had been outdoors. This new facility provides a large indoor training area with a 50-foot-high roof, which allows training activities year-round in all weather conditions.

The building includes classrooms, offices, a breakroom, a conference room, locker rooms, and a large training arena. Site development included incorporation of existing overhead power lines, right-of-way coordination, new stormwater facilities, new parking areas, emergency vehicle access, and space planning for exterior lineman training operations.

The building consists of two steel frame structures. The high bay training arena is oriented perpendicular to the street, while the classroom wing runs perpendicular. The exterior building walls are divided into three areas of different siding types. Each wall has weathered, corrugated siding forming the corners and flat, metal panel siding in the middle.

The 50-foot-tall training arena is the heart of the facility. Two large overhead doors on either end of the room will allow access by PGE’s fleet trucks. In the center portion of the arena, a gravel area allows trainees to set power poles in the ground, simulating real world conditions.
